Learning to drive is an exciting milestone! At 1st Gear Driving, we help teens develop the skills, confidence, judgment, and safe driving habits they need for a lifetime behind the wheel. Our program combines professional instruction with supervised practice at home, working alongside families throughout the process.
Age requirements: Students must be at least 15 years and 9 months old by the first classroom session, or turn 16 by the final classroom session. We do not currently enroll students older than 21.
Location: All classroom sessions are held in person at our Amherst classroom. Remote or Zoom attendance is not available.
Attendance: The first classroom session is mandatory. Students are expected to attend every class. A maximum of 4 classroom hours may be missed for approved reasons, such as illness or family emergencies. Sports, vacations, and extracurricular activities are not approved reasons for absence.
Parent Orientation: One parent or guardian is required to attend. Students do not need to attend. The orientation date and time are listed with each class below. Families registering after orientation will receive a summary and instructions.
Before class: Students must complete at least 10 hours of supervised driving at home before their first classroom session. This 1st Gear requirement helps teens develop basic vehicle control and confidence. Families needing additional help may explore our Private Driving Lessons .
During the program: Driving appointments are scheduled throughout the classroom course, generally once per week. Students may begin scheduling after attending their first classroom session. We also require one hour of supervised practice at home for every hour of behind-the-wheel instruction.
NH licensing requirement: Eligible drivers under 18 must complete at least 40 hours of supervised driving outside Driver Education, including 10 hours at night, before obtaining their license.
Tuition: $1,100 for the complete program. A $300 nonrefundable registration deposit is required to reserve your student's seat and must be paid within 15 days of registration. The remaining balance is due on the first day of class.
Payment: Cash and checks are accepted. Credit card payments may be made online through the student's account and incur a 2.5% processing fee. Please review the enrollment terms for cancellation and transfer policies.
Please select a class your teen can attend consistently. If your preferred class is full or not yet available, email us with your student's name, date of birth, and preferred class session to request placement on our waitlist. Waitlist placement does not guarantee enrollment.

Our NH-approved Teen Driver Education program includes 30 hours of classroom instruction, 10 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction, and 6 hours of in-car observation.
